Roger Williams was an English man, born in 1603, who advocated for tolerance of different religious views as well as being in favor of the separation of the church and the state. He was also a strong defender for the Native Americans and held them in high regard. The Puritans were against his ideals, believing that separation between church and state was not necessary and Roger was, in fact, looked down upon. He was then seen as a danger to their Puritan society because he held the belief that no religion could be held over any other, that no religion was more "true" than another. In this way, Roger's views differed from the people with whom he settled with. His views, however, were similar to the other Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in that they both believed they should be allowed to practice their own beliefs there.
