The tree of great peace of the Iroquois 5 Nations was taken to be the white pine and symbolized peace for this confederation as sought by the great Iroquois man Dekawinedah who strongly promoted peace and was opposed to war. Literally the white pine had large leaves or needles and could provide protection from the elements but figuratively it was thought to give continuation to the chiefs that even though they died their legacy would live on.
