This behaviour is clearly unhealthy and dysfunctional, so people are not doing those behaviors out of their own need or to improve their lives, but for other reasons.
These reasons include peer pressure - which can be a result of low self-worth or an unfulfilled need for acceptance or problems of mental health such as depression.
Some factors that influence then are problems in the family - this can cause stress and the need to be accepted by the peers and insecurity about the future - making people feel insecure
