The french colonies didn't deal much with agriculture and was not self reliant. They were mostly based on hunting and gathering furs and leather that could be taken back to Europe. The french worked together with the Natives because they needed safe access to the land and they needed help from someone who knew the land so they traded with them and had good relations.
