Write a complete, balanced equation for this double displacement reaction. (hint: the solid is a compound of ni 2 ions and hydroxide ions.) write the complete molecular equation rather than the net ionic equation.

For this problem, we are asked to write the net ionic equation of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and nickel chloride (NiCl2) and the balanced chemical reaction of the diuble displacement reaction. For the net ionic equation, we need to write the reaction wherein the ions are in their dissociated form. We do as follows:

Ni2+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) + 2Na+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) ---> Ni(OH)2(s) + 2Na+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq)

Cancelling the ions present in both sides, we are left with

Ni2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) ---> Ni(OH)2(s)

This would be the net ionic equation. For the balanced chemical reaction or the double displacement reaction, it would be expressed as:

NiCl2(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) ---> Ni(OH)2(s) + 2NaCl(aq)
