the area is 70 square inches, this means


A=length *width\\A=\ 70\ square\ inches\\70=length *width

the length of the rectangle is 3 inch longer than the width

this means that you can take the width and add 3 inches to obtain the length or take the length and subtract 3 inch from it to obtain the width

(1)length = width +3

or

(2)length - 3 = width

now replacing (1) in the area equation

A=length*wide

A=(width +3)*wide

also

A=70 square inches

hence

(width +3)*wide=70

Let

width = w

rewriting

(w+3)*w=70

w(w+3)= 70
