Ulysses S. Grant was the most famous Union general during the American Civil War. He became particularly famous after the capture of Fort Donelson in February 1862. He became Lieutenant General (in charge of all Union armies) after the victories at Shiloh, Vicksburg and Chattanooga. He also won the battles of Petersburg and Appomattox.

Considering the role Grant had during the war, he probably had the following opinions:

• Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice some men in order to win a battle.

• It is morally wrong to hold slaves.

• It is vital for the strength of the Union that we win the war against the South.

It is likely that he also would have defended these facts:
