A hydrogen ion donor is an ionic compound that provides a hydrogen ion (a charged state of hydrogen). A proton donor, on the other hand, is a covalent compound that provides a proton or a hydrogen atom. A hydrogen atom has 1 electron and 1 proton while a hydrogen ion is composed only of 1 proton which gives it a charge.
