The cultural rebirth that occurred in Europe from roughly the fourteenth through the middle of the seventeenth centuries, based on the rediscovery of the literature of Greece and Rome. This is the basic definition of Renaissance.

In art history, the term renaissance, refers to a span of time between the 15th and 17th centuries

The name comes from the French word meaning "rebirth". This period was characterized with revival of art, literature, and learning, increased awareness of nature, a revival of classical learning, and a more individualistic view of man.
