What practical question should you ask yourself before you begin writing ?

did I plan my answer. do I know what I want to write in each paragraph and what I want to convey to the reader (happiness, shock etc). are there any linguistic devices I can use to convey these ideas (metaphor, simile, short sentences, etc).

What practical question should you ask yourself before you begin writing ?
