see diagram

so the length and width of the outside walkway is 5+2.5+2.5 and 6+2.5+2.5 or 10 and 11

the perimiter=2(L+W)=2(10+11)=2(21)=42ft

need 42 ft of fencing

Answer:

Hence, the amount of fencing needed to surround the walkway is:

42 ft.

Explanation:

It is given that:

A garden that is 5 t. by 6 ft. has a walkway that is 2.5 ft. wide around it.

Hence, the fencing is to be done around a garden whose dimensions:

(5+2.5+2.5)ft. by (6+2.5+2.5)ft.

= 10 ft by 11 ft.

Hence, the amount of fencing which is to be done is equal to the perimeter of the garden.

We know that the garden with walkway is in the shape of a rectangle with:

Length=10 ft.

and width=11 ft.

Hence, Perimeter of garden=2(10+11)

=2×21

= 42 ft.

Hence, the amount of fencing needed to surround the walkway is:

42 ft.
