In The Big Fish, William tells the story of his father through a series of tall tales. Why might tales that challenge the truth be a more effective way of getting to the heart of William's father?

Before William's dad died, he told his son several ridiculously strange stories of his life, which did not seem to be truthful. But when William retells these tales, he relives them and gets to know his father in a different way. William believes that his father is a liar and the stories of him help reveal the truth.
