so here... 20x2=40+9=49

In order to solve this problem, use inverse operations. First subtract 9 from 49 to get 40, then divide 40 by 2 to get 20. So the original number it all started with was 20. You can check your work by following the instructions again. So 20*2=40, and 40+9=49.
