Wolfgang was an officer in World War II and took an interest in the Battle of Monte Cassino. After the war, he learned at the University of Pennsylvania, where his important instructor was Thorsten Sellin. At Penn, Wolfgang took his MA (1950) and Ph.D. (1955) in criminology. Until the point when his passing in 1998 he was an educator of criminology at the University of Pennsylvania.
