based on what you know about america in the 1700s, how would colonists react to edwards sermon? would they find it frightening, hopeful, or harmful?

I don't know much about how they reacted but i know that his sermons became a big part of the Great Awakening. His goal was to present both negative and positive images of God and (their) power. By using emotional tactics, he wanted people to feel the presence of God and not only think or acknowledge it.

The colonists were people of Christian background that underwent a trip to colonize under the name of the king of England the new world. But they embraced Christian beliefs, as well as education, and aspirations. Therefore after Edwards' sermon, they found out many of them were sinners and the effect of being sinners. Because Edwards told them God was able to see all their acts and sinners would eventually fall to hell and that there was no way to avoid it. Thus, they would feel fearful of a punisher god.
