Given:
A megabyte holds 1,000,000 = 10⁶ characters of data.
Because a gigabyte is 1,000 times more than a megabyte, it holds
10⁶*1,000 = 10⁶ * 10³ = 10⁹ characters of data.
Answer:
A gigabyte holds 10⁹ or 1,000,000,000 characters of data.
