4 tools mapmakers use to help readers interpret information on maps are as follows:
1- The legend: also know as the map key. This is found in every map. It is a small box drawn at the bottom of the map the helps you understand everything in the map itself. It explains the symbols, color, icons or pictures used in the map.

2- The title: This is very essential to help you understand what map you are reading. It gives you a first hint about what you are reading.

3- Symbols: maps usually use symbols to illustrate different parameters. The meanings of these symbols are explained in the legend of the map.

4- Color code: maps use color codes to show different regions. For example: yellow represent desert, green represent land and blue represents seas and oceans. The color code of the map is illustrated in the legend of the map.
