A = 40*36 - 20*10 = 1440 - 200 = 1240 yd²

find area of larger figure

then subtract area of cut out

larger figure 40 *36 = 1440 square yards

cut out = 20 *10 = 200 square yards

1440-200 = 1240 square yards total
