This story is like a parallel to adam and eve - so it was probably the fact that Manu listened to the fish (god Brahma) and obeyed him in order to create a vessel in which the fish could survive along with many other creatures. Manu listened and helped the god and therefore in return the god Brahma was pleased and gave him a wife.
