It motivates the organism to satisfy the need.
If you feel hungry, the aroused tension state will motivate you to go and get food in order to not feel hungry anymore. This works for any other need - if you are thirsty, if you are sleepy, if you need something, your organism will try to make you satisfy that particular need.
