Determine whether the formula describes y as a function of x. Explain your reasoning. y=9x+1

Answer: Yes it is a function

Explanation:

for every x value it is going to give me a unique y value.

EXAMPLE: If x equaled 4 then I would have to just multiply it by 9 and then add one and it would give me the UNIQUE y value which would be 37.

if the question was y² =x, the next thing I would do is take the square root of both variables which would give me y= ±√x. since it is two x values for y it cannot be written as a function.

The formula given above describes y as a function of x. It means that the value of y depends on the changes that would happen to the variable x. Variable y is the dependent variable and x is the independent variable. We are given a linear function so y has a linearly related to x.
