In the beginning of the play (A Raisin in the Sun), Beneatha has got a straight hair. When Asagai refers to that as being “mutilated,” Beneatha cuts it down. The new style is an allusion to the African heritage. It is a pride of heritage and exploration of African roots. The style is also a direct reference to Afro style which was widespread in 1960s.
