Why were portraits important in early history?

because back then they had cameras like we do today so the only way you could record someones image is by drawing or painting a portrait of them

Their were no cameras to take pictures with so one of the only ways to see what you looked like was through a portrait. It also showed that you had money and power because only the wealthy were able to afford to get the portraits painted.
