Why was al-azhar so important?

Al-azhar Mosque is located in Cairo, Egypt created on 970. It was supposedly named after Muhammad's (prophet of Allah) daughter Fatimah, who was given the title pf az-Zahra which means 'the enlightened one'. It is now a university which it centers on the study of Sunni Theology and Islamic laws.

Al-Azhar University is a university in Cairo ( Egypt ). It is the oldest university in Egypt, founded in 970 by the Fatimids. Its students studied the Qur`an and Islamic law. It also was one of the first universities in the world. In 1961, Al-Azhar was re-established and wide range of secular faculties were added: business, science, engineering, medicine. Al-Azhar is important for its mission to propagate Islamic culture.
