The earliest methods of medical pain control for childbirth required the mother to be deeply sedated, a state known as general anesthesia.
General anesthesia is used to induce a state of unconsciousness, which is controllable. In that state you are unable to feel any pain. General anesthesia can be used intravenously or inhaled.
