To solve: Work backwards.
A number is given for Bob: 27
We can make equations according to the relations between the three people to find how many books Jim has.
Bob: 27
Charles: 2/3(Bob's value)
Joe: 3(Charle's value)
Solve for Charles first: 2/3(27)= 18 books
Then solve for Joe: 3(18)=54
Answer: Joe has 54 books.

j=3c, c=2b/3, b=27 so
j=3(2b)/3
j=2b, since b=27
j=2(27)
j=54
So Jim has 54 comic books.
