3p-7+p=13

add 3p and p to get 4p

move all terms not containing p to the right side of the equation.
Since-7 does not contain the variable to solve for, move it to the right side of the equation by adding 7 to both sides..

add 7 and 13 to get 20
4p-20

Divide each term by 4 and simplify.
divide each term in 4p=20 by 4.
4p/4=20/4

Reduce the expression by cancelling the common factors.
cancel the common factor.
4p/4=20/4 cancel out the 4 in top and bottom of 4p/4
divide p by 1 to get p.
p= 20/4
divide 20 by 4 to get 5.
p=4

The resulting equation after the first step in the solution would be 4p - 7 = 13
