This situation is an example of irony.
Irony is the use of words that would normally signify the opposite of what really happened. The usual purpose of using irony is for humorous or emphatic effect. Though the readers would know that Mrs. Mallard didn’t really died because of joy upon seeing her husband, the writer uses irony in this part to make it humorous to the reader by telling the exact opposite of what should have really happened.
