Plug it in and simplify.
-(-3)^2+1
First apply the exponent.
-3^2=9
-(9)+1
Then add.
-9+1=-8

Evaluate f(x)= -x^2+1 for x=-3
then
f(-3) = -(-3)^2+1 = -9 + 1 = -8
