A balloon is filled with gas at 27.2 degrees Celsius until its volume is 2,160 mL. The balloon is then placed into an industrial freezer for twenty-four hours before being remeasured. If the final temperature of the gas in the balloon is -24.1 degrees Celsius, what is the final volume of the balloon? Round your answer to the nearest 1 mL.

answer and explanation

we can use the following equation to find the new volume

V1/T1 = V2/T2

V1 = 2.160 mL = 0.002160 L

T1 = 27.2 +273.15 = 300.35

T2 = -24.1 +273.15 = 249.05k

v2 = ?

V2 = V1T2/T1

= (0.002160 x 249.05) / 300.35

= 0.5379/300.05

= 0.00179L

= 1.79 mL

= 2 mL
