The United States district courts are the common litigation tribunals of the United States federal court system.
The district court acts as the court of admiralty and equity. Both criminal and civil cases are registered there. Each national judiciary district is approved for having at least one courthouse, and several districts have more than one. The prescribed name of a district court is "the United States District Court for" in the name of the district. For example, the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri.
