We have 2/4 yard of string and we are using 3/6 of it. Sometimes in mathematics, the word 'of' means 'multiply'.

(2)/(4) * (3)/(6) = (6)/(24)

Simplify.

(6)/(24) = (1)/(4)

So, 1/4 is the answer.

2/4 reduces to 1/2

3/6 reduces to 1/2

so he used 1/2 of 1/2 yard

1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4

he used 1/4 yard
