Haiti won it's independence from France in the Haitian Revolution. In 1791 a slave revolt took place in the French colony, the leader was Toussant-Loverture, a former slave. In 1795 he made peace with France and abolished slavery, by 1801 he had conquered the spanish portion of the island. After a new intent of a french invasion and restauration of slavery, the slaves revolted again. On January 1809, the island was declared independent.
