40 - 5b - 3.25 = 7
36.75 - 5b = 7
-5b = 7 - 36.75
-5b = - 29.75
b = -29.75 / -5
b = 5.95 <=== 5.95 per book

The books were bought for $40 - $7 - $3.25 = $29.75

$29.75 divided by 5 books is $5.95, answer A.
