Dissolution and dissociation of aluminum chloride:
AlCl₃(s) → Al³⁺(aq) + 3Cl⁻(aq)
The cation of aluminum is hydrolyzed:
Al³⁺ + 2H₂O ⇄ AlOH²⁺ + H₃O⁺
AlOH²⁺ +2H₂O ⇄ Al(OH)₂⁺ + H₃O⁺
Al(OH)₂⁺ + 2H₂O ⇄ Al(OH)₃ + H₃O⁺
