A captain of Doniphan's men in the name of Captain John Reid discovered that Parras in the Mexican state of Coahuila was attacked by the Comanche Indians. The captain felt sorry for the townspeople's suffering so he and his men pursued the raiders, killing almost all of them and retrieving horses and captives.

The Comanche were involved in the war before the war even began. There had been a lot of conflicts between the Comanche and Mexicans because the Comanche invaded Texas territory which disrupted the Mexican military. The Comanche were so good at pillaging the area that when the US arrived during the war the region was already devastated. Comanche were not in an alliance with the US, but they were later forced out by the US and into the reservations.
