The Catholic Church believed that the Pope was closer to God than anyone else.

The Pope or supreme pontiff is the Bishop of Rome and ex officio leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. Besides, the pope is head of state of Vatican City. Popes have always claimed to have spiritual authority.

The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus personally appointed Peter as leader of the Church and after Peter death, popes have played his role in the Catholic Church through time.
