We have that


(-\infty,-2)\subset(-\infty,1)

For this in a) we have that


(-\infty,-2)\cap(-\infty,1)=(-\infty,-2)

So the answer in a) is


\begin{equation*} (-\infty,-2) \end{equation*}

Now for b) we have that


[1,3)\subset(0,5)

and


[1,3)\cup(0,5)=(0,5)

So the answer in b) is:


\begin{equation*} (0,5) \end{equation*}
