The kinescope allowed for the recording of a video screen. This allowed for the preservation of live television or in some cases, when live TV needed to be broadcast for different time zones. It wasn't a great quality and it was expensive to use. A few alternatives were created in the 40s and 50s, but it was the Quadruplex tape that stood out for its low cost.
