Paula made a square fish pond in her backyard. It was 1 yard long on each side. The flowers she wants to put around it should be planted 1/3 of a yard apart. How many flowers should Paula buy?

We will determine the number of flowers Paula should buy as follows:

First: We have that the perimeter of the pond is 4 yards.

Now, we also have that each plant will be 1/3 yard apart, so:

(1)/(3)x=4\Rightarrow x=12

So, she will have to buy 12 flowers.
