What is the range of
f(x) = -| x + 2| + 3

The least that can be contained in the absolute value sign is zero.  So the maximum f(x) is 3.  The absolute expression approaches +oo which is then multiplied by -1, so as x approaches infinity, f(x) approaches -oo.  So the range of f(x) is (-oo, 3]
