For glycolysis or an anaerobic catabolism to proceed, GLUCOSE must be present. It is the main reactant of the processes and it is broken down to form pyruvate, which is subsequently converted into energy, in the form of ATP molecules. One glucose is converted into two pyruvate molecules, in which 2 ATP are consumed, and 4 are generated.
