To determine the amount of wrapping paper needed for a rectangular bow, Charlie finds the surface area of the box. How much wrapping paper is needed if the box measures 11 in. by 4 in. by 7 in.?

The surface area of a rectangular prism is:

A=2(xy+xz+yz), where x,y, and z are the dimensions of the prism.

In this case:

A=2(11*4+11*7+4*7)

A=2(44+77+28)

A=2(149)

A=298 in^2
