Why were Puritan schools referred to as dame schools?

They were for girls to learn how to be housewives.
Males had to attend academies.
Males and females were allowed to attended together.
Instruction was presented in the home.

The correct answer is: “Instruction was presented in the home.”

Respected puritan women who knew how to write and read turned their homes into schools and taught people. This was the first elementary schools in the US. They taught boys to read, write, arithmetics and literature. Girls were allowed but they would be taught homemaking skills.
