The example of encoding that Ben is practicing is the semantic encoding. It is a process in which it use a similar meaning or a particular meaning as they encode sensory input. It could be seen in the statement above as canine is a dog, feline as a cat and the avian as a bird. He uses the semantic encoding in order to remember the words and the words that he associated with them has a similar meaning, that's why it is considered to be a semantic encoding.
