Answer:

Two, DNA strand, DNA strand, semiconservative process

Step-by-step explanation:

Prior to cell division (meiosis and mitosis), it is vital for the cell to duplicate its genetic material (DNA) in order for each daughter cell to get a copy each of the correct number of chromosomes. This process of duplication is called DNA replication and it occurs in the S-phase of the interphase stage.

Before replication can commence, the double-stranded DNA needs to be separated, this is done by HELICASE enzyme which unwinds the DNA strands by breaking the weak hydrogen bonds holding its nucleotide bases. The DNA gets separated into two single strands in a Y-SHAPED structure called replication fork.

Each new strand then serves as an individual template for the synthesis of a new complementary DNA strand. DNA polymerase enzyme adds nucleotides that are complementary to the ones on each strand. Hence, two

new DNA molecules are produced in which each contains one parental DNA strand called the old strand and a newly synthesized strand (complementary to the old strand).

This process of synthesizing a complementary strand from one parental strand to form two new DNA molecules is what the SEMICONSERVATIVE model of DNA replication entails.

Now, templates of new daughter DNA molecules are created, each consisting of one old original strand and one new strand rendering DNA replication a semi-conservative replication process. The parent (old) or leading strand is replicated in 3’ to 5’ direction while the lagging strand (new) is replication in an opposite manner (5' to 3').
