A client's arterial blood gas results reveal a PaO2 of 55 mm Hg. The client's admitting diagnosis is acute respiratory failure secondary to community-acquired pneumonia. What is the nurse's best action?

Answer:

There is a need to facilitate ventilation through the procedure of NPPV.

Explanation:

The NPPV or noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation refers to a kind of mechanical support in which a mixture of air and oxygen is delivered via a positive pressure all through the respiratory tree, that is, through a noninvasive surface. It collectively comprises many modalities of noninvasive ventilation that can be passed on through a standard ICU ventilator or a portable apparatus.

I think the best course of action the nurse should take in this case is “to use a high-flow Venturi mask to deliver necessary amount of Oxygen as prescribed”. The purpose of this is to reach normal levels of Oxygen which is about 80 mm Hg.
