The process of absorption of carbon dioxide by the oceans is known as ocean acidification. This occurs when ocean water absorbs carbon dioxide and the carbon dioxide combines with water to form carbonic acid. This carbonic acid serves to increase the hydrogen ion concentration in the water, and therefore reduce the pH.

Increased ocean acidification is harmful for marine life, as marine animals can survive only in a small specific pH range.
