In this problem, we need to balance the forces out.

First let's find what the force of gravity is on the paper so that we can figure out how much force the electrostatic force needs to be to lift the paper.

Fg = (3x10^-3)* 9.8 = .0294 N

Now we need to figure out the force required to lift the paper. We can figure the charge out with this formula (coulomb's law)


F_e=(kq_1q_2)/(d^2)

Where d is the distance, the 'q's are the charges and k is coulombs constant

Since we know the force to be .0294 N, we can set that to the Force and solve for q2

q1 = -10x10^-6 C

d = 2.6 x 10^-2 m

k = 9 x 10^9

Fe = 0.0294 N

Plugging all of these values in and solving yields us

2.21x10^-10 C = 2.21x10^-4 μC
