We have a sequence of number, the first number is 8 and the subsequent numbers are found by subtracting 9 from the previous, so:

\begin{gathered} a_1=8 \\ a_2=a_1-9=8-9=-1 \\ a_3=a_2-9=-1-9=-10 \\ a_4=a_3-9=-10-9=-19 \\ a_5=a_4-9=-19-9=-28 \end{gathered}

The fifth number in the pattern is -28
